I thought I’d take you on a quick behind the scenes trip on a commercial I hosted. Actually it’s an infomercial, and the set up and everything involved is pretty intense. The shoot had multiple cameras to capture all different angles, we had lighting, reflectors, fans, and there were cables running everywhere. We had wardrobe stylists, make up artists, and lots of extras. Myself and another woman were the hosts for the show and we spend a week working on the set which consisted of three different luxury mansions. Models that keep their portfolios current usually get more work. So, every time you get new pictures whether from test shoots or tear sheets you’ll add them to your book. You only want to keep current pictures in your book. As a general rule of thumb a current picture is a picture that is less than six months old. So if you have pictures older than six months you might want to look into shooting again soon. The IRS knows this too and they will want their share. When you earn money it’s called income and the IRS collects income taxes from you. Modeling is a little bit different than the average 9-5 type job. At most jobs you are likely to collect a check every two weeks and most of the time you receive that check after having taxes taken out for you. Modeling is different, as a model you are an independent contractor. As an independent contractor you are hired as needed. So you don’t get a check every two weeks, and when you do work your earnings are paid out without having taxes held. You’ll have to pay those taxes owed directly to the IRS yourself. Often times your agent will let you know it’s time for new pictures, but remember your agent may have many models they work with and if you are in a busy agency they can’t focus all their attention on you. So, when it comes to updating your book you might have to take some initiative. The way I look at it, if I’m tired of looking at the same old picture chances are my agent and clients as tired of looking at them too.
